Operation "Ataka"-The Battle for the Norwegian Basin

April 1993. The West's attention remains focused on Middle
Eastern troubles. The Soviet economy is a shambles. A small
clique of Soviet military officers and hard-line Party members
has quietly seized control of the reins of government in the
USSR, determined to return "Mother Russia" to her former glory.
Soviet staff planners have concocted a fantastic plan, dubbed
Operation "Ataka"("Attack"), with the broad aim of taking and
holding strategically vital real estate in the North Atlantic as
a hostage against significant financial, economic, and technical
concessions from the Group of Seven. Accordingly Spetsnaz and
airborne units have conducted a daring assault on Jan Mayen
Island in the Greenland Basin, capturing and making usable the
small NATO airbase built there in 1958. Strong Soviet Army
formations have invaded Northern Norway, taking control of
several key airfields. The augmented and surprisingly air-capable
Northern Fleet is at sea, last spotted steaming for the Icelandic coast.

NATO's response has been limited not only by Middle Eastern
preoccupations but by the cuts in force size and readiness
enacted in the euphoria of the early 1990's. Nevertheless, a
powerful Carrier Battle Group(CVBG) has been dispatched from
Norfolk, with a small but potent Marine Amphibious Unit(MAU) in
it's wake. Simultaneously the British have assembled a Royal
Marine Commando, as well as a combined SAS/SBS detachment and
supporting units, all embarked upon a squadron led by the CVH Ark
Royal.

NATO's objectives are clear: (1) defend Keflavik and prevent its
seizure by Soviet forces; and (2) re-take Jan Mayen and drive
the Soviet Northern Fleet from the Norwegian Sea.
